Lhaviyani Atoll Resorts 2026: Channel Diving and Surf in the Northern Maldives

Lhaviyani Atoll, also written Faadhippolhu, sits roughly 120 kilometres north of Malé and is one of the most underrated diving and surfing destinations in the country. Its narrow channels create some of the country's most reliable shark dives, while the eastern reef break at Kuredu pulls in a steady surf crowd from May through October.

Where Lhaviyani Sits in the Atoll Map

Lhaviyani is administratively coded Lh and reached from Velana International Airport by a 35–40 minute seaplane transfer. The atoll comprises around 50 islands, of which five carry resorts: Kuredu, Komandoo, Hurawalhi, Kanuhura and Innahura. A handful of local islands, principally Naifaru (the atoll capital) and Hinnavaru, are open to guesthouse visitors but are not the tourism focus they are in Maafushi or Dhigurah.

The atoll's defining geographic feature is its eastern channel system — Fushifaru Kandu, Kuredhdhoo Express and the southern channel near Komandoo — which funnel currents from the open Indian Ocean into the lagoon and back, producing exceptional drift diving on incoming tides.

Channel Diving in Lhaviyani

If you have an Advanced Open Water certification and reasonable current experience, Lhaviyani's channels deliver some of the most consistent action diving in the Maldives. Kuredhdhoo Express, off the resort island of the same name, is famous for grey reef sharks patrolling the channel mouth in groups of 15–30 individuals. Fushifaru Thila, on the eastern reef, is a recognised manta cleaning station from June through November and a Marine Protected Area since 1999.

Notable Dive Sites

  • Kuredhdhoo Express — drift dive with grey reef sharks, eagle rays, big-eye trevally schools.
  • Fushifaru Thila — manta cleaning station, soft coral overhang, MPA status.
  • Shipyard (Felivaru) — twin wrecks (Skipjack 1 and 2) covered in coral growth, accessible to recreational divers.
  • Peak Wreck — pinnacle and small wreck combination at 18–25 metres.
  • Anchor Point — outside reef wall with frequent reef shark sightings.

The Resorts of Lhaviyani

Lhaviyani has a more compact resort line-up than Ari or Baa, which keeps choices clear. The table below summarises the active properties for the 2026 season.

Surfing at Kuredu

The reef break off the eastern tip of Kuredu (locally called "Kuredu Right") is a long right-hander working best on a south-southeast swell from May through October. It is one of the most accessible reef breaks in the Maldives because Kuredu Island Resort runs guests to the lineup by dhoni in under 10 minutes. Kuredu also operates one of the country's longer-running surf schools, including beginner sessions on smaller days.

Manta Rays and Hurawalhi

Hurawalhi Island Resort sits adjacent to Fushifaru Thila and operates a marine biology team that runs guided snorkel and dive trips during the manta season. The resort also operates 5.8 Undersea Restaurant — at 5.8 metres below the surface, claimed as the world's largest all-glass underwater restaurant, opened 2016. Whether you eat there or not, the resort is one of the few in the country where you can reasonably expect to see mantas without leaving the home reef during peak months.

Best Time to Visit Lhaviyani

For diving and snorkelling, March–May and October–November tend to deliver the calmest seas with strong manta probability either side of the southwest monsoon. For surfing, the May–September window is essential. For pure beach holidays without weather risk, December–March is the safest dry-season window.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the seaplane transfer to Lhaviyani?

Most resorts in Lhaviyani are reached by a 35–40 minute seaplane from the TMA terminal at Velana International Airport. Operations are daylight-only, so late-evening international arrivals will overnight in Malé before transferring.

Is Lhaviyani good for non-divers?

Yes. Resorts like Kuredu and Kanuhura have substantial lagoons, kids' clubs and snorkel sites suited to families. Lhaviyani's house reefs are particularly good for snorkelers because most resort islands sit close to drop-offs.

Can I see mantas at Hurawalhi outside the season?

Mantas are most reliable at Fushifaru Thila from May to November during the southwest monsoon plankton bloom. Sightings outside that window are possible but not predictable.

Is Kuredu Right a beginner-friendly surf break?

It can be. The break holds 1–2 foot days through to overhead. The resort's surf school runs beginner sessions on smaller swells, but the reef itself is shallow on a low tide so beginners should listen to local guides on conditions.

Are there local-island guesthouses in Lhaviyani?

Yes, on Naifaru and Hinnavaru, but the guesthouse scene is much smaller than in Maafushi or Ari. Travellers wanting a guesthouse experience usually choose those better-developed alternatives.
